Toland: 'P-Mate' to make its Colorado debut
The freedom to pee in any position is now available to all Colorado women.
P-Mate, a disposable female hygiene product that allows women to urinate standing up, is the primary launch product of the newly formed Broomfield company, Go Your Way. The company, the first official domestic distributor of P-mate, began online sales of the product in late August.
Karen Diamond, of Broomfield, is the founder and sole employee of Go Your Way, and she operates the company out of a home office. She said she thinks P-Mate, which has been selling for years in Europe, will become just as popular in the United States.
"P-Mate is really about freedom for women to take care of a basic bodily need in a manner equivalent to a man in terms of convenience," Diamond said.
She said P-Mate is advantageous to women when toilets are either unavailable or too filthy to use. The product, which folds to fit in a pocket or purse, lets women be hygienic and discreet during traveling, outdoor activities, and events where portable toilets are used, Diamond said.
The product is particularly attractive to female hikers and campers who want to avoid unnecessary exposure, itchy flora or misguided urine when peeing outdoors, she said.
Made from recycled materials and sold in $5 packs of five, P-Mate is disposable and designed for single use.
Diamond, who also serves as the fine arts and crafts coordinator for the Boulder County Farmer's Market, said initial domestic response to GoYour Way's distribution of P-Mate has been positive: In the Web site's first week of activity, www.goyourway.net received 25,000 hits and more than 100 orders for P-Mate packs. Diamond said she hopes to begin in-store distribution of the product in Colorado this fall.
Emily Oates, sales associate at Boulder Running Co., said she thinks P-Mate would be good at outdoor events where the portable bathrooms "might not be ideal."
"I know I've been hesitant to use overflowing restrooms at city marathons, and P-Mate would probably make the experience more feasible and pleasant," she said.
